UofM Family Reading and Science Program II

This program is part of the University of Michigan Museum of Natural History series Predators and Prey: The Eternal Struggle. On Saturday, February 15 from 2:00-3:00 PM, participants aged 6-11 years old (with their caregiver) will explore the world of dinosaurs. Titled "Meals with Megafauna: Sabertooth Cats, Dire Wolves, Mastodons and Man", participants will find out if humans always been apex predators. The giant mammals of the ice age not only had to worry about the climate but there was a new contender for apex predator status- humans. In this workshop we will examine the rise and fall of the megafauna and human's emerging role as apex predator. Registration begins on Janurary 20.

Google Services: Youtube

Thru the end of February and the beginning of March, we will be hosting three iLab classes on all things Google. A team of National Honor Society students will be sharing their knowledge while also completing their NHS service project.

In the first class, YouTube, participants will learn how to create a YouTube account, upload videos, and share videos with friends and family. They will also learn how to like and favorite a video and even create a playlist so you can view all your favorite videos with just the click of a button. So come in and learn about how to use YouTube as a social media and video storage tool. Program takes place on Saturday, February 22 from 10:00-11:30 AM. Space is limited and registration begins on January 20. This class is designed for Internet users aged 13 and up.

There will also be a drop in session the following week on Saturday, March 1 from 10:00-11:30 AM for additional one-on-one assistance.

Gluten -Free Support Group

Have you wondered why everyone is talking about being "gluten-free" ? Are you starting the journey of being gluten-free or have you been without gluten for a long time? This class/support group is for you. Dr Cynthia Shaft-Toll DC will share health benefits of the gluten-free lifestyle : how and where to shop for gluten-free items, how to and where are the best gluten-free restaurants, how to cook for holidays and special events. Guest speakers also will be presenting at different months. Some sample gluten-free food will be available and we hope for the group to share their best recipes as well.

Top Ten Photo Preservation Mistakes

Presented by Priceless Photo Preservation of Ann Arbor, this is an interactive workshop that helps participants figure out the often confusing world of preserving their family photos, movies, videos, scrapbooks and slides. Among other things, you'll learn what digital formats to avoid, how commonly used scrapbooking items actually put your items in danger and how to digitize your mementos properly. Participants are encouraged to bring photos, slides and similar family memorabilia for personal evaluations and consultations with PPP partners Rob Hoffman and Hanna Primeau.
This program will take place on Wednesday, February 19 from 7:00-8:30 PM.

Detroit Association of Black Storytellers Present: Vickie Slaughter

Join us on February 27 from 7:00-8:00 PM as we celebrate Black History Month and welcome storyteller Vickie Slaughter from the Detroit Association of Black Storytellers.  Ms Slaughter will be weaving tales of African lands, trickster animals and African American heroes.  Listen and enjoy!

Hummingbird Music Together: CANCELLED

On Wednesday, January 8, from 10:00-10:45 AM, you and your child, 0-5 years old, will love playing follow the leader during Follow me Down to Carlow, Counting the Stars while rocking in your arms during Great Big Stars, and thinking up favorite treats from Grandma for “Trot to Grandma’s House." Music Together is an internationally recognized early childhood music program for babies, toddlers, preschoolers, kindergarteners, and the adults who love them. This program will be presented by staff from the Grosse Pointe Music Academy of Canton. This program is taking place during the regularly scheduled Family storytime, in the Community Room.

This program is part of the University of Michigan Museum of Natural History series Predators and Prey: The Eternal Struggle. On Saturday, January 18 from 2:00-3:00 PM, participants aged 6-11 years old (with their caregiver) will explore the world of dinosaurs. Titled Dining on Dinos: Long necks, sharp teeth, club tails, killer claws, participants will learn what fossils tell us about who ate who in the distant past. The world in the time of the dinosaurs was a brutal place. We will explore what fossils can tell us about the lives and coping strategies of predators and prey animals. Registration begins on December 23.

This class/support group is for you. We will meet in the Purple Room on the second Tuesday of every month and discuss a variety of topics relating to this. Dr Cynthia Shaft-Toll DC will share health benefits of the gluten-free lifestyle : how and where to shop for gluten-free items, how to and where are the best gluten-free restaurants, how to cook for holidays and special events. Guest speakers also will be presenting at different months. Some sample gluten-free food will be available and we hope for the group to share their best recipes as well.

Starfish Family Services: CANCELLED

On Tuesday, February 18, from 9:30-11:30 AM, the highly trained staff from Starfish Family Services will present Terrific Twos: Staying a Step Ahead of Conflict.
Participants will learn supportive ideas and interactions, developed specifically for toddlers, that keep conflicts to a minimum when working with this age group. Bring your children as free daycare is provided by Starfish's daycare professionals.
